Low Carb Eating Is Not Always Good For You
Defined Tag: Low Carb Eating. One of the biggest dietary health concerns lately centers around low carb eating and whether it is truly worth the effort or not. This is a valid question, as more often than not, diets and their basic principles fly to the wayside for yet another fad diet, another way of thinking about food, or even scientific evidence that contradicts the diet's philosophy. This brief article will address some of these issues. Lately two diets in particular, the Adkins and the South Beach diets have gotten people talking about carbohydrates and low carb eating. The reason for this is that both of these diets, arguably the two most popular diets nationwide, recommend the avoidance of nearly all carbohydrates. Yet is this a valid argument? This depends upon your viewpoint. You must ask yourself which is more important: losing weight quickly or losing weight more slowly, say a pound per week. Most people would openly admit that the latter was their choice, as it sounds more sensible, i.e. safer. However, most of those people would also secretly opt for the first choice, losing weight for its own sake. Sadly, while low carb eating does produce a reduction in weight, most of this is superficial as the majority of the weight loss is through body water, rather than fat. Thus, not only would a person give up the "bad carbs" like blueberry pie, but also the "good carbs," like tomatoes. The fact is that fruits and vegetables, which constitute a great number of the carbohydrates in the world today, are extremely good for the body. The problem that we experience with any food -carbohydrates or other foods in our diets is more based upon level of processing than upon the type of food group it's found in. Processing of carbs depletes the food (and our bodies) of bran, the outer part of grains which contains most of the vitamins and minerals in the carbohydrate. The remaining product is the endosperm, which has little nutritional value and breaks down in a way that makes the food shoot up high on the glycemic index. (For more information on the GI, refer to the University of Sydney's website on this matter.) So, while low carb eating may meet certain immediate social needs, in the long run it is best to stick with the good carbs. Bon a petit!
